dennis will co-present a short course on exploration geochemistry at the ame bc roundup in vancouver on January 18th & 19th, 2020
Dennis will co-present short course SC3 Geochemistry: Acquisition, Quality, Management, Interpretation with Pim van Geffen of Vancouver Geochemistry at the 2020 Roundup conference in Vancouver, British Columbia.
This 2-day short course is designed for geology students and geologists at the start of their careers looking for an overview of best practice in exploration geochemistry. Day 1 of the course would also be suitable for database professionals wishing to know more about the collection of geochemical data and the assessment of its quality, as well as for more seasoned geologists wishing to review recent advances in the collection, analysis, QA/QC and interpretation of geochemical data.
Day 1 of the course covers geochemical sampling strategies, preparation and analytical methods, quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC), and data management; an A to Z of designing, implementing and reporting geochemical data in compliance with current public reporting codes.
Day 2 will introduce a structured approach to both univariant and multivariant exploratory data analysis of geochemical data. Also covered would be the integration of geochemical data with lithological and mineralogical data to develop a fully integrated interpretation. Data interpretation approaches will be illustrated using selected case studies.
The course is largely based on PowerPoint lectures but will be interspersed with short practical exercises to reinforce some of the strategies and methods to be introduced. Participants will therefore need to bring a laptop computer for the course. Exercises will use Excel (Day 1) and ioGAS data interpretive software (Day 2). A demonstration version of ioGAS software should be downloaded and installed immediately prior to the course.
